U.Matskevich: The Belarusan regime acts unacceptably in the international arena

The expulsion of the official representative of Belarus from the PACE Political Affairs Committee’s meeting was a pointed action, showing the deputies’attitude to the actions of Belarusan authorities.

This opinion was expressed by the head of the Board of the International Consortium EuroBelarus Uladzimir Matskevich.

Andres Herkel, PACE rapporteur on the situation in Belarus, explained the expulsion of the Belarusan authorities’ representative by the issues of Belarusan civil society representatives’ security, who were speaking at the meeting.

"I do not think that representatives of Belarusan civil society, human rights organizations, when being invited to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe or in any other high European structures, are afraid that their names will emerge somewhere in the state institutions in Belarus. That’s because, in one way or another, their names are well known", noted Uladzimir Matskevich.

"In practice, generally, public persons of Belarus appreciated in Europe, are not touched by the Belarusan authorities. Exceptions take place when these people are on special hunt, when they are consistently persecuted, in a separate campaign, with the involvement of a number of structures and people. For example, as it has happened to Ales Bialiatski. I can imagine the amount of work that the Belarusan security services should have done in order to gather the incriminating material, and then to arrest and imprison Bialiatski", said the public leader.

"After all, the people who, one way or another, speak in the name of Belarus, are absolutely not cowards”, underlined the head of the Board of EuroBelarus.

"Thus, on the part of PACE it was more of a pointed action, showing the deputies’ attitude to the actions of Belarusan authorities. This was a response to the behavior, words and actions of Belarusan diplomats, to start from the current Minister Vladimir Mackey and to finish with the Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of Belarus Andrei Savinykh", said Uladzimir Matskevich.

Commenting on the statement by Andrei Savinykh, who had compared the PACE with meetings of the Communist Party in times of the Soviet Union, he noted that undiplomatic behavior is mostly typical of Belarusan diplomats.

"That’s happened despite the fact that Savinykh is one of the most professional MFA employees, and in general, he is a reserved and proper person. But in some situations, he also commits for politically incorrect or undiplomatic statements. But it is basically understandable, because Belarusan diplomats are employees of the diplomatically unacceptable government. Like the government, like its diplomats", said the head of the Board of EuroBelarus. Herewith, he noted that he wouldn’t shoulder all the blame and responsibility upon the diplomats.

"The politics of the Belarusan regime is to blame. It is unacceptable, acting in international affairs the way the Belarusan leadership does", summed up Uladzimir Matskevich.
