The Main Council of the official Union of Poles in Belarus has satisfied the petition for a resignation of the leader of the organization Stanisław Siemaszko.

“Family circumstances” were specified by Siemaszko as the reason of his resignation in his petition, as informed by BelaPAN.

Mieczysław Łysy has become a new chairperson of the organization. Until now, he was a vice-president of the UPB and headed the Minsk Branch of the Union.

Siemaszko was elected a chairperson of the Union of Poles in Belarus at the age of 57 on an uncontested basis in 2009.

The present head of the organization, Mieczysław Łysy, is known basically for his comments on the death of the leader of the Polish Self-Defense, Andrzej Lepper.

Allegedly, the Union of Poles has no means to pay for the rent of its offices and premises, as informed by EuroRadio. This information was astonishing for Leonid Gulyako, the representative in the matter of religion and nationalities.

"They pay the most minimal payment for their offices. We petitioned and there was a decision of the special commission at the Administrative Department of the President, according to which they pay only 0,1% for these offices. And it is practically nothing!", Gulyako resents.

However, Mieczysław Łysy says, the Union does have financial problems, and they are considerable.

"There are debts for the newspaper - it is unprofitable; there are debts for salaries. About Ivianiec - there is a big Polish House there, which demands monthly municipal payments that are quite considerable. There are questions in Lida - there, they manage to cover the expenses thanks to the collected rent payments, but still, in the winter period, it does not suffice", informed Mieczysław Łysy. Also, he added that after the split in the Union of Poles, its official part does not receive anything for their needs from Poland.

The financial problems have forced the management of the Union to lease their premises in the Polish Houses. This has caused even a bigger discontent in Warsaw.

By the way, Mieczysław Łysy, as well as the majority of activists of the Union, is not allowed to enter Poland.
