Poland is interested in buying companies in
Belarus, Waldemar Pawlak, deputy prime
minister/economy minister, said at a meeting held by a joint Belarusian-Polish
commission on economic cooperation in
Minsk
on January 14, BelaPAN said.
Ties between
neighboring countries are becoming especially important during the
global economic crisis, as they simplify conditions for efficient
economic cooperation, he said.
Poland is also interested in
taking part in energy projects and investment in the Belarusian
economy, Mr. Pawlak said. “We see big opportunities for this,” he said,
noting that Poland, which generates a third of its electricity by
burning brown coal, has necessary knowledge and technical opportunities
for the implementation of such projects.
“The Customs Union opens up new opportunities for the development of trade and cooperation,” the Polish premier said.
In
addition, Mr. Pawlak said, Poland is set to assist further the
development of Belarus’ contacts with European Union member countries.
Belarusian
Deputy Prime Minister Ivan Bambiza noted that Belarus is interested in
cooperation with Poland in a broad number of areas, describing the
growth of two-way trade in 2008 as a serious success.
The
trade reached $2.78 billion in 2008, which was a six-fold increase
compared with 2002, Mr. Bambiza said, noting that the trade, however,
declined by 48.4 percent to $1.4 billion in the first 11 months of 2009
compared with the same period of 2008 due to the crisis.
The vice premier emphasized the need to simplify mutual visa formalities.
