Britain and
Belarus enjoy good cooperation in several fields, British
Ambassador Nigel Gould-Davies said at a news conference held in
Minsk on June 12 on the occasion of the birthday of Her Majesty
the Queen.
According to him,
some 3,500 Belarusian children resident in Chernobyl-affected areas
travel every year to the UK for respite holidays organized by British
charities. Every such child gets a gratis visa, he noted.
“Following the successful introduction of biometric
visas last September, the embassy developed a unique project to take
biometric data from children living in radiation-affected regions, so
they do not have to come to Minsk. No other British embassy does this,”
the ambassador said.
“Trade and investment links are also growing, and
there is potential for much more,” he said. “The world-class expertise
of the City of London is available to Belarusian companies seeking
access to financial resources.”
“There is effective, mutually
beneficial cooperation in combating organized crime, and in military
liaison,” the ambassador added.
“It was very nice to learn that, according to a
recent television poll, Britain is the country that most Belarusians
want to visit. I hope they are able to do so,” Mr. Gould Davies said. //BelaPAN
